Keep an Eye

“While life must be lived forwards, it is best understood backwards.”
When you board a city bus, it is important you keep an eye on the conductor behind you. Lest you may forget to collect the small change he owes you.

Sita was sanctified by Fire.
Rama built a wharf on the Ocean (Water)
Honey Guide

Honey guide is a bird that alerts the tribal people about the locations of beehives in the forest. The tribal people follow the bird, bring the beehives down, squeeze the honey and leave the wax comb for the bird to eat.
Who is selfish here? The bird? Or the man? Who is the loser?
The bee of course!

Bapu, the legendary artist, cartoonist and film director is generally a closed book.He prefers to be undistracted while at work. But he will listen provided the suggestions offered are worth implementing.
I and Sasidhar, a fellow cartoonist were invited for a preview of Bapu’s film “Gorantha Deepam”.
The story is about a housewife who is lured and secluded by some men who are no other than her husband’s close friends. Sensing their ulterior motives, the woman attempts to escape. Her husband who was sent away deliberately by friends, returns now. Seeing the plight of his wife and the evil designs of his ‘trusted’ friends, he takes his friends to task.
In the movie, the entry of husband and his grappling of the situation did not look convincing. So, I suggested to Bapu, that if visuals of incidents of deceitful friends are shown as intercuts as the husband proceeds to attack his friends, then the scene would be more appealing to the viewer. Bapu readily agreed. The climax scenes of the film came out with real punch.

He was Dilip, a young energetic lad glued to his key-board. He was composing jingles and BG scores. I saw him in a recording suit. A friend of mine Mr. Modi, in whose studios, Bapu’s video lessons for AP school children were made, one day told me that young Dilip was a genius and a great music director in the making. True to what he said, Dilip made his film debut in Roja as A.R. Rahman and rose to instant fame. Incidentally for all the animation shorts which Bapu made with my assistance, Rahman scored the music.
Years later I showed those shorts and took pride in telling my students in the Heart Animation Academy, that the BG score was composed by no less a person than Rahman himself.
From Kodambakkam (that’s where Dilip lived) to Kodak Theatre (that’s where Rahman was honoured with Oscars) the maestro’s historic journey is the result of hard work and dedication.

A frog looked at a butterfly in wonder and said, “I cannot understand how an ugly worm could metamorphose into a beautiful insect?”
The butterfly replied, “If that doesn’t happen, how will the frogs get their food?”
The frog whereupon flicked his tongue and ate the butterfly.
Moral: One should never fall an easy prey!
Taj

Taj is a beautiful monument of love and compassion. Visit Taj at least once in your life time and make sure you have your wife or lover by your side.
Status

Nobody would want to trundle a hoop where he had driven his Benz. It is important that one has to struggle hard and maintain his status in life, uniform and steady.
Hanuman

Ramayana is expressed in one simple sentence. HE built, HE beat, and HE brought.
Rama could not have built a wharf and fought Ravana and rescue Sita without the assistance of Hanuman.

India’s main cities Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are known for their slums. Slums or no slums India is also known for its stray cattle, dogs and beggars.
Recently the dogs have won the recognition, with the Movie of Danny Boyle being nominated for the Oscars.
Let us hope the cattle and beggars too will draw the attention soon.
BED

It is said that man is born on a bed, spends some of the best moments of life on bed and dies on bed.
No bed room is complete without an attached bath-room. Many of the bath-rooms are fitted with the most expensive items than the bed room! Life has no meaning if it is spent in a bedroom that is without a bath room.

Ramakrishna Pukkalla, a fellow cartoonist became a close friend of mine in my three decades of association with him. He was my admirer to begin with and we used to correspond with each other. He was working in New Delhi when I first visited him. He took me and my wife on a sight-seeing tour in and around Delhi.
Years later when I joined an Animation Production house in Hyderabad, Ramakrishna met me there. Having retired from Services, he was on the look out for a suitable post-retirement assignment. He evinced interest in Animation. Fortunately for him there was a training program under my guidance and he readily joined. He learnt the techniques and came out successfully. He was appointed as an artist in the Syndication department and later was entrusted with the faculty responsibilities too in the Animation division.
Ramakrishna used to meet me often for advice, assistance and concept development.
I was writing a lot for him. Even after we moved apart and relocated in different places, Ramakrishna continues to keep in touch with me on various assignments and my writing job continues with same vigor.

I had appeared for an interview only twice and on both the occasions, I was a total failure. I fumbled answering questions. I realized my ‘Interview fear” (similar to “stage fear”) and I was praying that I should get a job without my appearing for an interview.
My prayers were answered and I was appointed as Demonstrator (in the Department of Natural Science, Sir Theagaraya College, Chennai-21) right away based on my credentials. The first day I joined duty, my HoD asked me to go for a lecture class. I was given a topic and two hours time for preparation.
As I entered the class, students stood up to receive me with their expressions curious and their eyes glaring. Fear gripped me momentarily, but I wriggled out of it very quickly.
I began my work and went about sketching on the board asking the students to copy whatever I draw. The students followed my instruction. After about 20 minutes, when sketching was over, I began explaining the different stages of fertilization (the topic for my lecture). It was easy for the students to follow my lecture and they listened with rapt attention. The bell rang and I stepped out of the class room. My third interview was a grand success!

Most Hindu marriages are arranged ones. The boy meets the girl only on the nuptial night and after the wedding is over. “Love at first sight” is very rare. Many married couples find it hard to define” Love”. It takes quite some time before they understand that they are in love with each other. I and my wife were never separated until she had to travel to America to be with our daughter who was expecting a baby. I had to wait for her return for nearly 6 months. It was during that time, I really came to grips with what romance means to a man and his wife.

I met Srinivas, a fellow cartoonist some thirty years ago and ever since our friendship had grown manifold. Srinivas secured a job in USA and he continues to draw cartoons. His cartoons appear in magazines like Wall street Journal.
I had the opportunity of visiting my daughter in Houston, USA in 2005 where Srinivas came to meet me. We had a nice time together. When Srinivas was about to leave, I told him that was the last time I would be meeting him. But I met him in 2007 and also in 2008 in USA
Every time I tell Srinivas that I am meeting him for the last time, I get an opportunity of meeting him again and again.
